In yet another attempt at revamping the old, someone has attempted to remake a classic. This time, its Len Wiseman giving the 1990s original “Total Recall” (directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnie) a 2012 update. We all know remakes can do one of only two things – either not do the original justice (in which case it leaves us, the viewers pretty dang disappointed); or improve on the original (in which case, quite a few diehards could still be offended); so its pretty gutsy trying to put a new spin on something old which has gathered a strong fanbase over quite a few years.

In this version, Colin Farrell will be taking the role previously filled by the Governator, and apparently a much more “political” and “complex” plot forms the basis of the film. It also features Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel. Anyway, guess we’ll have to wait and see how it compares for ourselves when it is released in August 2012.

For now, at least we have the trailer:

Here’s the long-awaited first look trailer for the Peter Jackson film adaptation of the J. R. R. Tolkein prequel book to the Lord Of The Rings trilogy; The Hobbit.

The storyline of the book has been split into two sections for two movies – the first one being “An Unexpected Journey“, and the second “There And Back Again“; which is set to be released in 2013. Suffice to say it looks pretty epic, featuring a strong cast made up of certain characters returning from the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, such as Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen), Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom), Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) and the return of Gollum (played by Andy Serkis) among others; as well as a whole horde of new faces, including (a younger) Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman from Shaun of The Dead, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, and Love Actually). The visuals of the movie seem to follow in the steps of L.O.T.R., although they do appear to be slightly richer and more lush. Guess we’ll have to wait to see the full thing.

So in true Hollywood fashion, they’ve (they being writer¬†Hossein Amini¬†and director Rupert Sanders) managed to take something and twist it around into something completely different. Much like Catharine Hardwicke’s “Red Riding Hood”, released earlier this year, and all the other fairy-tale and fable adaptations going on at the moment, this one succeeds in changing the story completely, yet somehow keeping the names of the characters and the title. I mean, can anyone remember massive battle scenes, swarms of ravens, or gigantic forest beasts in the traditional “Snow White”, or even in the Disney adaptation? I don’t recall Snow White being a warrior or soldier? All I remember is a princess, a prince, seven dwarves and a witch. Anyway, the movie is set to be released in June next year, so we’ll only truly be able to talk about it then. Don’t get me wrong, this looks like a totally rad movie, I just don’t think its fair to try and claim that its based on the fairytale, or any other version, since it clearly has very little in common, other than the title. But anyhow, lets see what the all-star cast of Kristen Stewart (Snow White, previously in the Twilight Saga), Chris Hemsworth (The Huntsman, previously in Thor), and Charlize Theron (The Witch, I’m sure you know who she is), can do.

So being a Hunter S. Thompson fan, I was extremely excited to find out that one of his best works, The Rum Diary has finally made its way to the big screen. Really awesome that Johnny Depp is in it too, considering how great he was in the previous Thompson work to make it onto the screen – Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

This looks really awesome, and to be honest I just can’t flipping wait. It comes out internationally this Friday, hoping it won’t take too long to make its way into S.A.

I know what you’re thinking – “oh no… please not another ‘300’ wannabe” after the likes of ‘The Last Legion’, ‘The Warrior’s Way’ and even a TV series, ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ and its follow-up, ‘Spartacus: Gods of the Arena’; but unfortunately, the producers of the original have seen fit to extended Zack Snyder’s visual “graphic-novel movie” style, and this time, plug it into a pure myth, as opposed to historical legend, like in ‘300’. ‘Immortals’ is directed by Tarsem Singh (‘The Fall’, ‘The Cell’) and stars Mickey Rourke (‘Iron Man 2’, ‘The Wrestler’, ‘The Expendables); Henry Cavill (‘Stardust’, ‘Red Riding Hood’) and Luke Evans (‘Clash of the Titans’, ‘Tamara Drewe’). So with what seems to be quite a power-house of skilled visualist director and action stars behind it, the question follows as to whether it will live up to ‘300’ or just come out as another trying-really-hard-to-be’s. The plot follows the mythical story of the hero ‘Theseus’ and all his adventures and shit he does. So, the capitalising-on-300-ness aside, the actual visuals of this movie do look fucking spectacular, and I’ll definitely check it out, even if gets for the graphical element.
