/TABLET: ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD – XO3.0

The One Laptop Per Child organisation is a global organisation based on its mission of empowering the world’s poorest children through education. The Miami-based non-profit organisation started out with funding from member organisations such as AMD, Chimei, eBay, Google, Marvell, News Corporation, Nortel, Red Hat, and Quanta.

Their mission statement describes what they do best:

“We aim to provide each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop. To this end, we have designed hardware, content and software for collaborative, joyful, and self-empowered learning. With access to this type of tool, children are engaged in their own education, and learn, share, and create together. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future.”

Their latest concept is a $100 tablet named the “x03.0”. Although still a concept, Gizmodo reports that it will soon be a reality. Being designed for environments where power may not be easily accesible, it has a hand cranking feature which allows it to be powered up entirely by the strength in ones own two hands.

/INNOVATION: SKATECYCLE

People are getting crazier and awesome-er with transportation, and I stand by my statement that in no time we’re gonna all be riding hover-boards and lightcycles, but until then, we have the SkateCycle by Brooklyn Workshop.

This crazy little thing places the rider on (or rather, in) two in-line, manoeuvrable and twistable wheels. Its pretty crazy really, and looks like it takes some insane skill to ride (and do mad-ass tricks in). Nevertheless, its definitely on my wish-list!

Madness, I know. Check out the Brooklyn Workshop site for more info and further details on buying…

/INNOVATION: BODUM COFFEE LAB

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So this is pretty much the raddest coffee and tea maker I’ve ever seen, not that I’m a coffee connoisseur or tea enthusiast or anything. This design by Sunny Ting Wai Wong makes tea in one glass orb, and coffee in the other. I’m no engineer, so I’ll let him explain how it works:

A borosilicate glass reservoir & beverage filter are integrated as detachable modules, making the coffee or tea completely spill-proof. The engagement of brewing process is revealed in one central, elegant device. A new chapter in both coffee & tea culture!

Pretty cool stuff. More of Bodum stuff at the website:

/BICYCLE: RECORD-PLAYING BMX BIKE

No effing way… Whaaaaat? This here BMX bike, designed and built by  Merel Sloother, Liat Azulay and Pieter Frank de Jong, at Feats Per Minute, literally plays music off records on the wheels as you pedal. Yes, that’s right. Initially exhibited at the Dezeen Magazine Exhibition, this innovation is crazy rad.

/INNOVATION: TEMPERATURE-SHOWING SHOWER HEAD

This rather intelligent little thing makes the water glow with LED bulbs, and changes the colour depending on the temperature of the water. Must make finding your perfect favourite temperature easy to find without getting burnt, just keep adding heat til you reach that perfect mix of purple and red…

/INNOVATION: PLASTIC BOTTLE LIGHTBULB

This dude has a great concept, and it seems to work really well – by using a plastic drink bottle, some water, some bleach and a little sealant, he has helped a whole bunch of people’s homes get lit up, without any electrical costs whatsoever..

Really rad, and let’s hope we see more of these kinda things around!
