/LIGHTING: URBAN OUTFITTERS – CONSTELLATION LAMP

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

An awesome idea from Urban Outfitters: a constellation-projecting lamp. The theory is that this night light with recreate some of the night-sky constellations inside your bedroom when you go to bed – pretty cool no?

/HOME THEATRE: SONY – PLAYSTATION HOLODECK

At the risk of sounding like a 10 year old brat, I want one. Right now. Really badly. Wow. The guys at Sony decided to do a little project to promote the immersive-ness of the Playstation Store, so they commissioned Studio Output and Marshmallow Laser Feast to create this holodeck home theatre thing. Using a bunch of projectors, Playstation EyeToy cameras, Playstation Move controllers, and some props they made an amazing visually interactive and entirely immersive lounge which visually transports the viewer and their couch inside the visuals they are watching. By synchronising the projections and calculating the surfaces they are projected onto, the system is able to produce an insane virtual environment which surrounds the viewer. Although it obviously is just a project and isn’t absolutely perfect (you can see people moving props around, and the projections sometimes aren’t perfect), if someone could fine-tune it and make it home-friendly and easily accessible, they’d be pretty dang popular. Just imagine the possibilities in terms of movies, series, gaming and even social interaction – you could be immersed in whatever you are watching, experience the game you are playing on an entirely new level (ever seen Gamer?), and even interact with other people as though you are with them, from your lounge. Props to the dudes who made this; its sick.

Oh ya, and each scene was recorded in one take, with no edits or post-production – all live. Pretty insane.

/TABLET: ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD – XO3.0

The One Laptop Per Child organisation is a global organisation based on its mission of empowering the world’s poorest children through education. The Miami-based non-profit organisation started out with funding from member organisations such as AMD, Chimei, eBay, Google, Marvell, News Corporation, Nortel, Red Hat, and Quanta.

Their mission statement describes what they do best:

“We aim to provide each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop. To this end, we have designed hardware, content and software for collaborative, joyful, and self-empowered learning. With access to this type of tool, children are engaged in their own education, and learn, share, and create together. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future.”

Their latest concept is a $100 tablet named the “x03.0”. Although still a concept, Gizmodo reports that it will soon be a reality. Being designed for environments where power may not be easily accesible, it has a hand cranking feature which allows it to be powered up entirely by the strength in ones own two hands.

/CONCEPT: JASON GIDDINGS – GLASS KEYBOARD & MOUSE

This concept keyboard and mouse combo designed by Jason Giddings is boss. Touch-technology and multi-finger gestures give it a whole bunch of options and possibilities. I’ll let the designer explain:

/CONCEPT: NOKIA – HUMANFORM

One of Nokia’s latest concept is the idea of a “humanized phone”. It entails what they refer to as “a dynamically flexible device beyond touch screen and voice communication where technology is invisible and intuition takes over. Natural interactions are enabled with kinetic user interface.” This thing looks insane, possibly a bit weird, but aren’t a lot of new things before they become common? Considering that Nokia has been losing popularity ever since the introduction of other phones (cough cough, iPhone, Blackberry), it’ll be interesting to see what they do with this idea, and where it takes them.

/DEVICE: LEVITATING LAMPS

So at a company called Light Light said hey, lets make a lamp that floats. Jeez. Well pretty much, using some electromagnets, LEDs, and alien technology, they’ve come out with two lamps which can literally wirelessly float above their stands.

/DEVICE: KISAI NIGHTVISION WATCH

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Another watch, I know, but the dudes at TokyoFlash Japan just impress me that much. This time (please, please, please excuse the pun) the idea behind the watch is not so focussed on the optical illusion, but rather the “night vision” element of the watch face.

The hour is told by the ring running around the outside of the face, and the minutes are read from the digital numbers displayed inside it. Looks pretty confusing at first, but once you’ve seen how it works you can see how it makes telling the time, even in the dark, extremely easy and straightforward.

/DEVICE: OPTICAL ILLUSION WATCH

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

TokyoFlash Japan, a product design studio that focusses exclusively on designing radical stuffs has taken the idea of the optical illusion straight to your wrist…

The watch shows the current time on its face in a optical illusion in which the numbers of the time are lines angled in the opposite direction to the rest of the pattern. Sounds complex? Luckily theres a button on the side to hide the rest of the pattern and show just the numbers if you’re struggling to read the time.

/VIBRATION SPEAKER: ROCK-IT 2.0

Whaaaaaat!!!!??? Stick this lil gizmo onto (apparently) literally anything, and it turns it into a vibration speaker for your iPod, BlackBerry, laptop, or any device whatsoever with the standard 3.5mm audio jack on it.

This thing’s potential is absolutely amazing, and it seems to work really well. I just can’t wait to see when they give it a bigger brother which can turn your whole car into a speaker or something ridiculous like that…
